THINGS TO DO AND SEE
in Gombrèn
Mataplana Castle and the Count Arnau Museum

Guided tour revealing the story of one of the most important legendary figures of medieval Catalonia: Count Arnau.

As part of this tour, visitors are taken round the Count Arnau Museum in Gombrèn, to see the collection of objects found during excavations at Mataplana Castle, and then on to the castle-palace itself (11th-14th cent.), the former residence of one of the most important and influential noble families of medieval Catalonia: the Mataplanas. This castle was a troubadour court and, as legend has it, the home of the mythical Count Arnau. Visitors will be told the legend of Count Arnau and visit many of the sites connected to his story, such as the Banyuts Gorge, from which the Count emerges every night upon his horse of flames to wander the land.
